Are You Eligible?

Last month, The State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance made it known that as part of their Cooling Assistance Program, they are making a certain amount of free AC units for New York residents with existing medical conditions that could be made worse by the heat.
This comes as a welcome relief for many people living in NYC whose health is put in jeopardy by the summer sizzle!
The Home Energy Assistance Program is funding the plan with $3 million in the hope of helping the medically vulnerable. Soaring high temperatures in New York can cause life-threatening complications for those with certain pre-existing conditions, including the elderly and children. If these people do not have or cannot afford appropriate cooling systems, their health could be needlessly put at risk.
The Local Departments of Social Services are now accepting applications for the assisted cooling systems, and the benefits will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. Eligible New York households are required to meet the 2012-13 HEAP guidelines and will be expected to provide documentation that at least one household member suffers with a medical illness made worse by the heat.
If you think you may be eligible for the funding, fill in your application now at http://otda.ny.gov/workingfamilies/dss.asp
